Time Difference

Cambodia observes Indochina time (ICT) which is seven hours ahead of GMT. Cambodia does not observe daylight saving hours, so in the summer they are six hours ahead.

Money

The national currency is the riel which is available in 100, 200, 500, 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000, 100,000 denominations – however the US dollar is the most frequently used currency. ATMs are available in most major towns. Bear in mind that only a limited number of hotels, restaurants or upscale shops accept payment by credit card, therefore it is advisable to always carry cash.

Electricity and Plugs

Standard voltage is 230 volts and the types of plugs used are A, C and G (which is the same as in the UK). It is best to bring a universal adapter with you.

Local Amenities

Shops are open seven days a week from 07:00 to 19:00. Banks opening times will vary but in general should be open from 08:30 to 15:30, Monday to Friday. The Foreign Trade Bank opens Saturday from 07:30 to 11:30.

Media

Most newspapers and broadcasters in Cambodia rely on support from the country’s political parties, with the current Prime Minister controlling many of the outlets amid reports of ‘bullying’ to control the media. In Phnom Penh you can access the BBC World Service broadcasts on the radio (100FM). Television is a popular medium, with one state owned channel and a few private ones available.

The Phnom Penh central post office is open Monday to Saturday from 07:00 to 18:00. Allow ten days for mail to arrive in Europe.

To call Cambodia from the UK, dial 00 855 plus the area code without the 0 (for example Phnom Penh, 23) and then the number of your correspondent. To call the UK from Cambodia, dial 00 44 plus the nine-digit number of your correspondent (without the first 0).

Internet and Mobile Coverage

Cambodia’s telecoms infrastructure has expanded rapidly in recent years with the growth of mobile phone usage. There is generally good mobile coverage in Cambodia’s big cities, however in more rural areas you may find coverage extremely limited. It is worth contacting your service provider before you travel, as it may depend on your provider whether or not you receive good mobile reception.
