Ol Doinyo Lengai – meaning ‘Mountain of God’ in the Maasai language - is a sacred volcano in Tanzania’s Ngorongoro highlands. The volcano is over 370,000 years old and is the country’s only active volcano, towering 10,400 feet over the great Rift Valley which is known for its exceptional flora and fauna. It is possible to climb the volcano, and the views from the top are well worth the lung-busting hike, with breath-taking panoramas over Lake Natron (famous for its striking red waters) and the surrounding plains.
