United Arab Emirates at a glance

For most travellers, the initial pull to the United Arab Emirates is Dubai. Filled with city-sized malls, iconic skyscrapers and luxury beach resorts, it’s a city hard not to fall for. But beyond its superlative restaurants and bright lights lie six other emirates, each as characterful and unique as the other. In Abu Dhabi, the UAE’s capital, the only question ever seemingly asked is ‘how big?’ From the mammoth Sheikh Zayed Mosque to the grander than grand Emirates Palace Hotel, the UAE is where ultra-modern opulent prowess come by the bucketful. But around most corners of these dynamic cities, you’ll find untouched helpings of history, like the Muwaiji or Al Fahidi Fort, that hark back to the country’s long, gritty fight for freedom.
