Mauritius at a glance

Warning: It's a paradise. The island is around 40 miles long by 28 miles wide. There is no need to plan an itinerary when preparing for a trip: the main decision is where to choose your base: The northern coast, with the Grand Baie resort, is the liveliest, the west with its sunsets on Le Morne Barbant is the most romantic, the east coast with its fishing villages is the most authentic and the south, with its sheer cliffs, is the wildest. Choose where to go from one day to the next: recharge on the golden sands, enter the undersea kingdom, or explore the interior of the island (must-see: Port Louis and its Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanic Garden, which dates back to the 18th century; tea plantations,
Gris-Gris cliffs, the seven-coloured earth of Chamarel, the Trou aux Cerfs crater, Black River Gorges National Park, cloaked in tropical forest, dotted with waterfalls, and home to many species including the endangered Mauritian flying fox.
