Egypt at a glance

Egypt is slowly making a comeback on travellers' itineraries, and it's high time too. Our Egypt travel guide aims to answer some of the questions you may have before going to Egypt. Planning your trip well is essential (that's where we come in), as there are certain areas that are still not recommended for travelling, and some temples should only be visited under escort with a guide. However, getting the opportunity to explore the country as it is at the moment without the tourist hordes is a real delight. Divers will be blown away by the Red Sea coast – the collapse in tourism has given the coral reefs a chance to recover, and they've been restored to their former glory. In Lower Egypt in the north,
Alexandria is full of treasures, such as its mythical waterfront, Pompey's Pillar, the catacombs of Kom el Shuqafa, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Zan'et el-Settat, the Citadel of Qaitbay and the fish market. The great classics of ancient Egypt are all waiting to be explored without the crowds, too, including the pyramids of Giza, the tombs of the Valley of Kings, the temples of the Nile Valley, Denderah, Edfu, and Abydos in Upper Egypt. In Nubia, near Aswan, you'll find the temple of Philae, and to the south Abu Simbel; it's all there, and you'll have it all practically to yourself. In between trips back in time, don't forget to explore today's Egypt: get lost in the souks, smoke a shisha pipe, hunt for an antique, discover the local villages and watch life on the banks of the famous river... now is the perfect time to discover Egypt.
