Australia at a glance

Here's our Australia travel guide to help you plan your trip to this immense country. City guides first. The cities are your arrival point: Perth, in Western Australia, is the largest airport of entry in the country. It is the sunniest of Australia's capitals and grew significantly with the gold rushes of the late 19th century. Melbourne is Australia's most European city, the capital of fashion, cafes and concerts; between the rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef, Cairns is ideally located to discover the riches of Northern Queensland. Across the state, the point of entry is Brisbane, to head for Fraser Island and Sunshine Coast or Gold Coast beaches. And, far south, Sydney, which alone deserves a visit.
Nature, of course, the Blue Mountains in New South Wales, Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territories, where the beauty of the landscape rivals the richness of Aboriginal paintings, and the mythical Uluru (Ayers Rock). In South Australia, Kangaroo Island, where you can see seals, koalas, wild pigs, emus and kangaroos; in Victoria, the Great Ocean Road with its spectacular panoramas; and Tasmania to see the devil (but also plenty of wallabies, pademelons, echidnas, wombats, quolls, possums and dolphins). It's up to you, you can tailor your itinerary to your own tastes.
