To enter Karnak temple is to step into one of the most iconic - and easily one of the most impressive - sites of all ancient Egypt. Situated near modern day Luxor, on the Nile in Upper Egypt, the monumental city of Thebes was capital of the Middle and New Kingdoms, a complex built - and added to - by around 30 different pharaohs. There are beguiling passages lined with tall colonnades, massive granite statues, and countless elegant hieroglyphs adorning columns and walls. Thebes holidays also involve visiting the palace of Amenhotep III and the staggeringly lovely painted tombs in the Valley of the Kings, including that of Tutankhamun.
Even the artisans who made them have heir own elaborate tombs, at Deer el-Medina, nearby. Truly breathtaking.
