A tuk-tuk buzzing past a red telephone box. Buffaloes wandering in front of a Victoria era cottager. You must be in Nuwara Eliya, a town not surprisingly nicknamed 'Little England' by the locals. On any Nuwara Eliya holidays, expect timbered houses, a racecourse and even one of Asia's oldest golf courses in what was once a hill station where British colonial administrators escaped the seering heat of Sri Lanka's summers. At some 6,000ft above sea level, Nuwara Eliya is certainly cooler than other parts of Sri Lanka, and we even love the road that leads there, winding as it does through jade green tea plantations past tumbling waterfalls.
