AFRICAN HONEYMOON

Wide-open spaces, untouched nature, wildlife and charming havens: this is an unusual journey, which opens up onto the Namib Desert - pink and reddish-brown dunes that form an interwoven tableau spanning hundreds of miles: one of the world's finest landscapes. And then reaching the coast, after hundreds of miles of sand, dust and light, being met with the unlikely spectacle of the Atlantic and its waves crashing onto the beach. Fly to Johannesburg, great for enjoying the vibrant nightlife and an overnight stay at Gandhi's house. Then fly by helicopter to Botswana, and the Okavango Delta - from the sky, the maze of lagoons and marshes form an entrancing tapestry.
The shores and delta of the great river are a major draw for all of Africa's great beasts: lions, leopards, hippos, elephants and buffaloes all make their way through the forests of acacia and ironwood; dawn is the time for a private encounter with them, and also in the late afternoon - after tea and scones (it would be rude not to) - safari on foot, in a 4x4, in a canoe. Finally, the journey comes to a stunning conclusion with the majesty of the Victoria Falls, bordering Zimbabwe and Zambia.

YOUR TRIP

Accommodation includes - In Bostwana, a secluded private camp nestled in the Dhizaana Wild Reserve, a protected and under-visited wilderness area in the Khwai region, in the heart of the Okavango Delta, reached by helicopter. An extremely comfortable tent in the heart of pristine nature, with the staff exclusively at your service. Each day, head off on two safaris in an area that is home to abundant wildlife all year round. In Johannesburg, Satyagraha House, a house featuring traditional African architecture, where, a century ago, young Mahatma Gandhi created the satyagraha philosophy, that would soon be driving force in India's destiny. We have restored this historic house into a seven-room guest house museum, and have added three elegant brick and glass pavilions nestled in the garden to the existing rooms, honouring the simple approach so dear to Gandhi. Experience a philosophy that chimes with that of the first occupants, involving meditation and yoga, high-quality vegetarian menus, treatments and massages.

Included in the itinerary - Massage and evening in a jazz club in Johannesburg, private cruise on the Zambezi River, a private tour of Victoria Falls; high tea in the late afternoon, early evening cocktail in front of the falls, to soak up their majesty at any time of day.

Logistics - You'll be greeted on arrival at the airport; and, on the first night, briefed at the hotel with our local Concierge who has an amazing knowledge of the country. The terrain varies throughout the trip and so does the method of transport. 4x4 is the way to go on Namibia's roads and tracks; but along the canals of the Okavango Delta, you'll swap wheels for a dugout canoe. In Namibia, you drive; in the Okavango, the paddling is done for you. Between these two extremes of the journey, you'll travel by planes, helicopters, taxi planes, all-terrain vehicles with drivers. In Namibia, South Africa and Botswana, if there is an issue or if you have a sudden urge, our local Concierges are there to help.

Route

Everything is 100% tailored to you
DAYS 1 & 2

INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT TO WINDHOEK

Overnight flight, arriving in Windhoek the next day. Personal welcome at the airport and accommodation in a castle built at the beginning of the century by the Earl of Schwerin for his fiancée, Margarethe von Heinitz – an elegant and romantic address.
The capital city of Namibia is where Africa meets Europe, with its charming early 20th-century German architecture.
Pick up your hire car.
Things to see and do - Post Street Mall craft markets - the Christuskirche, a beautiful Art Nouveau-style Lutheran church - dinosaur tracks, thought to be between 150 and 185 million years old.
On your agenda - In the evening, meet with our Concierge for a personalised briefing at your hotel – they'll also give you a phone equipped with a local SIM card, along with their contact details and those of your accommodation throughout the trip.

DAYS 3 & 4

WINDHOEK - SESRIEM (NAMIB DESERT)

Head south to reach the dunes in the Namib Desert, one of the oldest deserts in the world. The landscape here unlike anywhere on earth, with its pure lines and extraordinary palette of colours, where apricot, orange and red-tinted sands sit under an intense blue sky. Sublime and unspoiled. Admire the immense display of apricot-red sand dunes, which are among the highest in the world (some are over 1,100ft high) and surround an ancient dried salt lake, bordered by beautiful acacias.
Set up camp for two nights in Sesriem, in a magnificent lodge at the entrance of the national park: the vast tents face onto the giant apricot-coloured dunes, and feature skybeds for those who want to sleep under the stars.
Activities - Climb the dunes to survey the apricot-coloured landscapes - spend the day walking the dune corridor between Sesriem and Sossusvlei - encounter desert animals, including oryx, springboks, ostriches, jackals and other birds.

DAYS 5 & 6

WALVIS BAY & THE NAMIBIAN COAST

Drive to Walvis Bay for a two-night stay overlooking the stunning lagoon with its pink flamingos and dolphins, a small pocket of nature within its own cosy and silent universe. Perfect service, attention to detail and wonderful food await.
Located in the heart of a former German colony, Walvis Bay has only been part of Namibia since 1994, when the city's sovereignty was transferred from South Africa. The area is rich in marine wildlife, thanks to the Benguela Current which flows here and encourages plankton growth.
On your agenda - A cruise to see the lagoon's wildlife followed by a 4x4 drive to the nature reserve at Sandwich Harbour, where the Namib dunes meet the Atlantic Ocean.
Things to see and do - Discover the nearby town of Swakopmund, featuring early 20th century Germanic architecture that looks as though it's been transplanted from the Baltic coast; take a wander around, or sample the sweet treats on offer on Kaiser Wilhelm Strasse - play a round of golf beside the beach - take a trip to see the ancient Welwitchias Mirabilis plants at Moon Valley.

DAY 7

WINDHOEK - JOHANNESBURG (SOUTH AFRICA)

Drive to Windhoek before flying to Johannesburg. Private transfer to Satyagraha House. Situated in the tranquil Orchards district, this thatched house was home to Mohandas Gandhi from 1908 to 1909. The site now houses a museum dedicated to him, as well as a guesthouse based around the principles that inspired the future Mahatma's famous philosophy. The bright and simple rooms here (two of which face directly into the museum area) are comfortable without being extravagant, while the vegetarian cuisine on offer is tasty and fortifying. This historic Kraal designed by Hermann Kallenbach (architect and friend of Gandhi) and the contemporary building skilfully added by Rocco Bosman each pay tribute to the spirit of openness and peace that inspired one of the great political and humanitarian minds of the 20th century.
On the itinerary - A massage on arrival, followed by an evening of jazz at the Marabi Club.

DAYS 8 & 9

JOHANNESBURG - MAUN (BOTSWANA)

Private transfer to the airport before flying to Maun, Botswana, followed by a private helicopter flight to reach a reserve in the Kwai region, where a private camp awaits. Spend two nights in the heart of nature in a comfortable, beautifully decorated tent, with the staff exclusively at your service. Meals are served either in the dining tent or outside, whichever you prefer. Go on two 4x4 or canoe safaris each day in a quiet area that's home to an extremely rich array of wildlife all year round. See big cats such as lions, leopards and cheetahs, elephants, zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, warthogs, hippos, crocodiles and antelopes, including the red lechwe and sitatunga. Seeing these animals in the wild never gets dull.

DAY 10

MAUN - VICTORIA FALLS (ZIMBABWE)

Fly by air taxi to Kasane, followed by a private transfer to Victoria Falls to spend two nights in one of the oldest hotels in the country – its construction dates back to the early 20th century when the railway linking Cape Town to Cairo was being built. This timeless location is minutes from the falls and full of British charm,
while the falls themselves are among the most spectacular in the world. Located between Zambia and Zimbabwe, the majestic Zambezi River plunges furiously into a 310ft-high void with a deafening roar. At one-and-a-quarter miles wide, the falls can be seen from over 12 miles away, and heard more than 20 miles away. There are small walking paths to explore above the abyss, but despite its popularity, the site remains wild and unspoiled, featuring lush vegetation, forest trails and suspension bridges. An absolute must-see.
On your agenda - Discover the falls with a private guide before enjoying a cocktail in a bar perched nearly 400ft above the tumultuous rapids of the Zambezi, just downstream from the iconic Victoria Falls Bridge. Soak up the spectacular view from the terrace with a cocktail at sunset – truly magical.

DAY 11

Victoria Falls

On your agenda - A private cruise on the Zambezi River. Have lunch on board while watching the animals on the river banks, drinking at the water's edge. In the afternoon, enjoy a traditional British high tea, accompanied by spectacular views of the falls.
Optional - Even more impressive when viewed from above, a helicopter flight over the falls is a unique experience.

DAYS 12 & 13

Victoria Falls - Return flight

Transfer to Victoria Falls Airport and international return flight via Johannesburg.

A la carte

A Bird's-Eye View

Victoria Falls by helicopter - This is a must. Flying over the falls gives visitors an even bigger appreciation of their impressive size and the incredible strength of the water making its way through five miles of winding gorges.
