From MEXICO to BAJA CALIFORNIA

This itinerary focuses on soaking up Mexican culture, lifestyle and local food. First, Mexico City. A tumultuous and sprawling capital, it combines Aztec ruins and futuristic skyscrapers, traditional 'tianguis' (markets) and designer galleries, regional cuisine and trendy pavement cafes. With a laidback boutique hotel as your base, experience the city on foot or by bike, and then head to Teotihuacan for a private day trip. Hop on a plane and you are in Baja California. The South. Next up is a road trip from the Sea of Cortés to the Pacific Ocean , along the trans-peninsula road. This desert region is vast and remote.
Think cacti, beaches, wild islands and majestic sierras for a close encounter with nature. Stop off in La Paz, a small harbour on the Sea of Cortes. This gulf - also known as the Vermillion Sea - shares the peninsula with the Pacific. The Sea of Cortes is 'the World's Aquarium', according to Commander Cousteau. Marlin, turtles, manta rays, whales, whale sharks... all can be seen while snorkelling and diving here. Take a boat to Espiritu Santo, an island of incredible biodiversity. Keep going north and you'll get to Los Islotes, the perfect spot for a swim with sea lions and kayaking on the bay of Bahia Balandra. Head south, towards Todos Santos on the Pacific coast. In the arid landscapes of Baja California, this small coastal town is an oasis of greenery. Head further south to the very end of the peninsula and Los Cabos. Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo are two of the trendiest towns in this part of the world, renowned for their party atmosphere.

Your hotel is in a tranquil eco-friendly location in SAN JOSE DEL CABO

, across the estuary away from the traditional hotel district. The hotel draws inspiration from the 'endless summer' mentality that was so popular on the beaches of the US in the 70s and has trickled down to Baja California, but with an eco twist. Guests stay in treehouses in the lush gardens, complete with outdoor showers and terraces. The restaurant focuses on fresh local ingredients and traditional recipes, with a 'farm to fork' philosophy.

Route

Everything is 100% tailored to you
DAY 1

Flight to Mexico

Welcome on arrival, private transfer and two nights in in La Condesa. The hotel occupies an Art deco building dating back to the 1920s; the interiors are beautifully decorated and distinctly stylish, the atmosphere relaxed, the rooms pleasant, while the rooftop bar attracts the bold and beautiful Mexico City jet set.
Mexico isn't a big city, it's a mega city. From Tenochtitlan to Chilango, history has left indelible contrasting marks in its wake. In the Historical Centre, The Great Temple, dedicated to Huitzilopochtli and Tlaloc, the Aztec gods of war and agriculture, adjoins the imposing Metropolitan Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary. In Saint Joseph's chapel, Christ with cocoa beans is a nod to the Aztec god Tlaloc. At the National Palace and the Palace of Fine Arts, the works of 20th-century mural painters (José Clemente Orozco, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Diego Rivera) express the tensions and dynamics that still exist in Mexican society today. In Polanco, the Sumaya Museum presents the art collection of Carlos Slim, 'the richest man in the world'. Indulge in chic shopping on President Masaryk avenue, relax under the branches of the Bosque de Chapultepec, visit the National Museum of Anthropology...

DAY 2

Mexico City & Teotihuacan

In the itinerary - The archaeological site of Teotihuacan. Private tour of the UNESCO World Heritage site, on foot and with an expert guide. In its glorious heyday, Teotihuacan (3rd century BC - 8th century) had two hundred thousand inhabitants. It was one of the megacities of the time. Today, the Causeway of the Dead, the pyramids of the Sun and Moon, and the residential complexes are still impressive to look at. A series of frescoes, some very well preserved, provide information on the city's life, religion, politics and economy. The visit reveals the astonishing level of organisation of pre-Columbian civilisations.
Just for you - In the evening, a table is reserved for you in one of our favourite restaurants in Mexico City , run by a young chef/artist who combines the pleasures of contemporary cuisine, with Mexican traditions and flavours.

DAY 3

Mexico - La Paz

Private transfer to the airport and flight to La Paz, capital of Baja California Sur. Pick up the hired car and spend three nights on the Maleon, the promenade by the sea. The hotel occupies a beautiful two-storey colonial house, comprising eight rooms with beautiful spacious decor and large windows. On sunny days, you can take your breakfast on the patio, and bask in the beautiful view of the Sea of Cortes.

DAYS 4 & 5

La Paz

La Paz nestles in a bay opening out on the Sea of Cortes, surrounded by superb beaches such as Bahia Balandra. An ancient pearl town, now popular for fishing, it features an inviting waterfront for a stroll, beautiful colonial buildings and the Regional Anthropology and History Museum Baja California Sur. Nearby attractions include islands for diving and the Sierra de la Laguna reserve.
Included in the itinerary - Espiritu Santo Discovery Day. A few miles from La Paz, Espiritu Santo is classified as a biosphere island, and welcomes underwater species that inhabit the crystalline Sea of Cortes. The variety of seabirds and blue-legged ducks is surprising, as is the colony of sea lions, dolphins, manta rays... You might be lucky enough to have a one-on-one with the sea lions. Snorkelling gear is provided.
Optional - Kayak off Bahia Balandra.

DAY 6

La Paz - Todos Santos

Quick drive south to the small coastal town of Todos Santos, on the Pacific coast. Spend two nights in a secret location on the ocean, a small corner of paradise located at the end of a bumpy trail. The hotel is surrounded by lush gardens filled with flora and fauna, and sits right at the sea's edge. The recently-built resort has nine colourful suites - painted walls, ceramic tiles, bright curtains - decorated with simple and refined craftwork. The terrace and its armchairs are an excellent vantage point for whale watching in season. Lunch on snacks at the beach, and enjoy a more refined experience at dinner in the restaurant. The hosts are charming, like everyone in Todos Santos.

DAY 7

Todos Santos

There are huge coves typical of California at the base of the Sierra de la Laguna. Gigantic waves, mango and palm orchards, art galleries and craft workshops form the backdrop of this small wild paradise nestled between the mountains and the ocean.
Optional - An introduction to surfing - horseriding

DAY 8

Todos Santos - San Jose del Cabo

Drive to the southern tip of Baja California Sur, to San Jose del Cabo, on the 'good side' of the estuary. Stay for two nights in a laidback boutique hotel, with its dozen cubic treehouses in a lush green setting. This is an excellent location from which to start exploring further north, in the Sierra de la Laguna if not previously done, and for bird watching in the reeds of the estuary. Before returning to your treehouse home.

DAY 9

San Jose del Cabo

There are myriad things to do and see here and in the surrounding area - Bask by the pool - start the day with a yoga session - work on your swing on the border golf course, one of the most beautiful in the country - a snorkelling or diving breakaway - taste authentic quality tequilas - a trip to Cabo Pulmo - stroll through the colonial centre of Los Cabos or admire the attractive shops of Mijares Boulevard - horseriding in the desert - ocean-side, a yacht trip, a fishing trip on the high seas or a whale-watching cruise...
